Need electrical help. Free beer!
« on: July 28, 2014, 08:21:50 PM »

In the process of installing these fog lamps, I accidentally shorted my passenger JDM bumper lights. I've tried to find it for the past two hours but I give up.

Anyone with electrical expertise wanna help? Beers/food/joyride on me.

We helped! :3
Seriously though check all the fuses. Old cars (like houses) are super annoying. Too many unrelated things on the same circuit. I remember in my 240 if there was no bulb in the dome light the radio wouldn't work. Also, if there was a fuse in the power window circuit, the battery would drain. Pull the fuse and the drain went away but the windows still worked.

It's not car side.  Power and ground from car are fine.  It's from the light cluster

Is the bulb burned out then? If you have power and ground all the way to the light there's not much else it can be.

It isn't the bulbs.  It's the wiring.

The wrong light turns on at the wrong moments.  Definitely a short in the cluster.  Can explain better in person.  Free beers!

How did u wire the fog lights in? Assuming u tapped into the same circuits as the bumper lights, where/how'd u splice into those wires? The fog lights are gonna have more of an amperage draw than markers FYI. They should be on their own separate circuits with a separate fuse and relay, perhaps using the markers as a trigger for the relay. (That is, if u want um on all the time.)

I spliced power and ground straight into the bumper lights.

I know I have a short somewhere on the bumper lights because I just blew a fuse to the parking and rear lights :(

Aftermarket fogs should have their own circuit like stated before. Simple solution, remove all connections for fogs and run separate circuit for fogs with a fuse somewhere between. That should fix the problem. If you want it triggeredby a factory source tap into parking lights to a relay like stated above. with our cars tapping into existing power sources is iffy to say the least... just personal experience between cars i have done from older and to recent. You never know what someone else has done 3 owners before you.

The marker light switch won't handle fog lights.  Run another wire and a relay.

Yes, it needs its own circuit. They look cool though!
