I bought another MR2
« on: October 18, 2015, 08:35:08 PM »
I was working in Tucson a couple of weeks ago, so I surfed Craigslist down there and got lucky...

I got an MR2,  blown 4ag bluetop and it came with a separate 4agze and 5-speed.

The interior was completely gutted, but the owner had almost all the pieces.

The MR2 was completely loaded with interior pieces, the trunk and the frunk were full of parts, The montero had a 4age, 4agze and transmission in it.

I had to go back to Tucson for another load of bumpers and the exhaust system.

It seems to be a Tucson car, no rust anywhere.  The paint polishes up really nice, but there are 2 pretty big dents in the car... and a smashed tail light.

It is coming together nicely, the plastic trim is nicer than my black MR2.

The fit of the front end is great, no uneven body gaps, the bumper, headlight and hood alignment is perfect.

Unfortunately I just noticed that the 4agze supercharger is locked up and does not spin, so that will need a rebuild.

The 4agze is US-spec, not JDM, I have the ECU and harness, but no intercooler.

I think the plaan is to try and get the supercharger working...

With or without the supercharger, put a GT3571 turbo on it, remove the 4agze intake manifold, lower the supercharger by a couple of inhes and install a Tvis manifold.  Run low boost - 14 psi on the 4agze computer and automatic transmission

True...  I might have to *gasp* sell one!

The 4agze is still sitting in the back of the SUV because I have to make room for it in the yard.

I started to clean up the corroded 4agze valve covers, they polished up pretty nicely, and I was going to have Jeff powdercoat them like the black Mr2.

....but then I saw something...

Some people see Jesus in a tortilla, I saw my name on my valve cover.

A little JB weld and primer...

A little spot putty and another coat of primer should completely hide the letters I don't want, and I'll paint the letters I want to see.

Personalized, engraved valve covers!

That is probably the best thing I have seen come from this group and so like you mister Twin Charger. Just so perfect its like Toyota knew 25+ years later there was going to be a Chris with the name Twincharger and secretly hid your name in the cover.

"I'm fat and he's Asian.  Crazy food is bound to come up in conversation."
      "wait, am I the Asian?!"
"yeah bro.  Yeah, I think so."
      "I'm white!"
"visually, yes.  But so is Takumi Fujiwara."

Yes....  You are an expert

Ok, I've been slacking...

I am slowly building the white MR2.

I am building it for what I need.

and what I need is a simple daily driver with A/C, great fuel economy and an automatic transmission.

I drive across town twice a day, so a twincharged project car isn't what I need.

This car has been sitting around as I slowly rebuild a stock engine for it.

The Two Twos

Building a stock 4age.  It has one replaced piston and rod, new rings, bearings, oil pump and water pump.

New head gasket and seals.

I didn't take pictures as I was putting it together.

Yes, an auto transmission....

Almost ready to drop the car on top of this...

That's what you do, you lift the car, push the engine/trans underneath it and then lower the car.

It will be something new for me.

So, more slow progress on the MR2,

I was ready to put the engine in, then I noticed that I had the wrong oil pan on the engine, so I had to swap it out.

Pretty sure it is all ready to go in now, transmission is bolted on and everything..

Car is ready, all the radiator and heater hoses are installed.  New oil cooler lines will be fitted after the engine is in.

Looks like there is enough room in there.

This is different....

The engine/trans stays on the ground, you lift the rear of the car, and slide the engine underneath.

When the engine goes in from the top and something goes wrong, the engine can fall and pinch your fingers.

When you are under a car which is held up by a hoist and something goes wrong...  you die.

...and just as I suspected, it fights you every inch of the way.

The firewall interferes with the distributor cap at the same time the intake manifold hits the axle, then the exhaust manifold hits the A/C lines and motor mount.

Once it is in, there is clearance all around the engine, and it looks really small in there.

So, now the engine/trans is in the car, but nothing is hooked up.

I have to read up about the axles, because mine have fallen apart inside the boots.  I guess you aren't supposed to pull on them when they are not connected to the transmission.

So, now to hook everything up and see what else I forgot....
