ae92 20v swap
« on: September 04, 2012, 09:11:46 PM »
Does anyone have any personal experience with this?  I'm considering doing a blacktop swap (engine and trans.) into my 1991 corolla le 4 door.  The car is a 5 speed with a 4afe efi engine.

I searched around a bit but couldn't find anything definitive.  I know I'll need custom wiring, but I'm not sure what else.  Supposedly 4age's with fwd trans. will bolt right in, but I haven't confirmed this.  I'm also wondering about little things like axles, shift linkage, heater, power steering, throttle cable, etc., etc.

Any help is appreciated.  ;)

I do know your stock fwd trans will work, I put a 4afe block into my 86, and we all know 20v bolt up to t50. So yes a 20v will bolt up to your fwd trans, anything 4a will bolt to anything  4a or 7a. Ask Efrain about the wiring, I bought the 4afe out of the 89 corolla 4dr, he was 20v swapping. I'm sure he has lots of info.

I'm looking to do the 20v engine and trans.  I'm hoping my stock mounts would work with the 20v trans.  I imagine it bolts in, but I'm also curious about the peripherals and little things.

Unfortunately, a bearing inside my stock trans. has gone bad.  It's still drives but I have a vibration that's getting worse by the day so it's on borrowed time.  I've toyed with the idea of doing a swap for a while, and the situation might be an excuse to finally do it.

Talk to Efrain.  I'm willing to bet a fair deal that he can answer all these questions for you.
"I'm fat and he's Asian.  Crazy food is bound to come up in conversation."
      "wait, am I the Asian?!"
"yeah bro.  Yeah, I think so."
      "I'm white!"
"visually, yes.  But so is Takumi Fujiwara."

Yes....  You are an expert

Throttle cable will need mod. axles would depend on if you go C series trans. obvious wiring harness needs mod. exhaust and Intake. Everything is super straight forward tho its a easy swap. Less involved than ae86 20v swap also IMO not too difficult to do.

Forgive my ignorance.  Is the c series trans. the stock 4afe trans., or a version of the stock 20v trans.?

Both... :P I will be more specific. I think your car has c50-52 trans. the one i was refering to is the c160. Its the 6 speed used with the blacktop and a version was available with lsd. look for 12c as the last digits on trans for lsd version. non lsd 12a is last digits.

That's what I'll probably do eventually. 6 speed trans. would be baller.

The idea is on hold for the moment.  The car still runs and drives although the sound of the bad bearing is obnoxious - I get a scraping and/or roaring sound depending on speed lol.  Plus I've been dumping way too much cash on the toy lately.
