What year range would you go for that is pretty inexpensive?

Depends on what ur planning on doing w/ it? I've always been partial to '84-'85's, since they come on xtra cabs, last years of the solid axle, stronger gusseted axle, and EFI. 22R's are fucken bulletproof and are up to most tasks given the proper gearing. As far as eng swaps go, (Toyota purists, plug ur ears/eyes  ;D ) I dig the 4.3L Vortec w/ auto trans swap!!! Tons of low end, decent top end, n I LUV autos for crawling/climbing!!! Again, depends on what u wanna do w/ it... 84's n '85's got real expensive in the past few years since ppl are starting to realize their worth. IFS trucks tend to be cheaper, will take u most places u wanna go, and they're a great starting point if u wanna build a hardcore wheeler.

I am very partial to the 22r. It never once gave me a problem. When your offroad with it they have enough power to get up anything slowly. Not too much where you start wheel spin. The ifs trucks drive really nice on the street and handle awesome. They have a very sporty feel, the response is great. I have had a dodge and a Chevy they don't have quick ratio steering and lightweight handling characteristics. So with sas or ifs I don't think you lose. Both great in my book. Get your hands on whatever straight example you can and enjoy it. They are getting pricier everyday and they aren't going to stop. I miss my hilux!

what axels are they?

Judging by the diff covers, I'm gonna say they're Dana's of some sort, 44's or 60's.

I see 6 bars holding that front axle in place :O

Close but there's only 5... 4 links and the panhard bar, the 6th is the steering drag link.
